Moving house is one of the most stressful events you can experience

Moving house is one of the most stressful events you can experience – up there with divorce, bereavement or losing your job. But as almost everyone will do it at some stage, Joel Harris of Jawitz Properties offers some tips.

  • Inspect the house before you arrive on moving day. It might need some cosmetic touches such as painting, grouting of bathrooms or repair of damaged floorboards or tiles. “If you’re in doubt about damp or roof leaks, get a property inspector in to give you a professional opinion. Check that the TV and telephone points are where you want them or have them moved.”
  • Get the house thoroughly cleaned before your furniture arrives. “Get the carpets cleaned, and scrub the bathrooms and kitchen. Unpack those rooms that you will need first, such as the kitchen and bedroom.” New owners can also get the locks changed if it will give them peace of mind.
  • Declutter – the best way to reduce possible stress it to be organised. Book the movers well ahead of time, label boxes properly and throw away stuff you no longer need or use. “Clutter causes huge stress in the long term and there are many organisations willing and able to collect things you no longer need,” Harris says.
  • Get to know your neighbours. This is important not only from a security perspective but socially. Neighbours can provide you with information on your local area. “Knock on their doors and introduce yourself. Your estate agent could help you get acquainted.”

Harris says five local telephone numbers should be on speed dial:

  1. Your security company.
  2. Your neighbourhood watch.
  3. A reliable neighbour.
  4. A plumber – just in case.
  5. An electrician – for the same reason.

“Although stressful, moving is a new adventure so embrace it.
