Check references and contact them before signing contracts

Before opening your home to contractors, ensure they are properly vetted, advises Charnel Hattingh, national marketing and communications manager of Fidelity ADT.

To minimise risk, check their references and contact them before signing any contracts, she says. “You can also do an internet search on the company or contractor to see if there are any red flags.”
Furthermore, it is important to question the contractor about the employees who will be working at your home.
“Find out if they are permanent or part-time employees.
“Ideally, your safest option is to use a contractor who has their own staff complement. Remember to ask who the supervisor will be on site and whether they stay on site or move between sites. Ask whether all employees have had credit and criminal checks done, and whether this can be verified.”
