Now in its third year, the sale coincides with the Investec Cape Town Art Fair
Works by a new wave of globally acclaimed South African artists – including Nicholas Hlobo, Athi-Patra Ruga and Simphiwe Ndzube – will be major attractions at Strauss & Co’s Contemporary Art auction in Cape Town on February 15.
It will feature 102 carefully vetted lots, among them a consignment of pan-African works from a South African collector.
Highlights from the sale will include:
* Hlobo’s embroidered ribbon assemblage Umphokoqo (estimated to fetch R400000 to R600000). This is the first time a work by this highly rated artist will appear on the secondary market in South Africa.
* Ruga’s wool and thread on tapestry canvas Touched by an Angel, pictured, (R700000- R900000) a pop-political allegory depicting a Rihanna-esque “bad girl” in a bikini bearing a flag.
* Ndzube, winner of the 2015 Michaelis Prize for the early-career photo triptych In Search Of (R120000-R160000). The pageantry in this tableau heralded the subjects and themes of his current painting practice.
Strauss & Co will also offer works by contemporary African artists with international presence such as painters Cyril Omamogho (Nigeria) and George Lilanga (Tanzania), and photographers Omar Victor Diop (Senegal) and Hassan Hajjaj (Morocco).
The sale will start at 6pm at Quay 7 Warehouse, 11 East Pier Road, V&A Waterfront. For more details and catalogues, call 0216836560 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
