CAPE TOWN: Our insider’s guide to Bloubergstrand

A wide selection of homes at various prices is available in this suburb, situated on the colder side of the Peninsula where the beach offers a postcard-perfect mountain view

One of several sub-areas in this particular part of Cape Town, Bloubergstrand is situated along the shores of Table Bay, north of the city centre, and its name translates directly as “blue mountain beach”, accurately describing it in one Afrikaans word.

Mainly a residential area, with a number of eating, drinking and shopping options, Bloubergstrand has a long and spectacular beach with the typical postcard view of Table Mountain.

In summer, when the notorious south-easter blows the rest of us away, ruining hair-dos and depositing dust and leaves in every hidden crevice in our homes, it’s enormously popular with kite surfers.

Being on the cold side of the Peninsula – the Atlantic Ocean – swimming is reserved for the brave (or foolish), but harvesting your own mussels is totally doable. Black mussels can be plucked off the rocks at low tide, and the more elusive white mussels can be coaxed out of the sand by “jiving” (the movement being similar to the dance).

“Everything you need is close by, and if you need to get to town it’s a short drive away, and you can even skip traffic by catching a MyCiti bus,” says resident Alexander May. “You are also spoilt for choice with a long stretch of beach, and of course the scores of overseas kite surfers add to the holiday feeling. For a sundowner, nothing beats watching the sunset from the lawn at Blue Peter, or you can head over to News Café on Marine Circle for a cocktail.”

Whether you’re looking for secure estate living, apartments or free-standing family houses, there is a great selection of properties in the various price ranges, says Just Property agent Liesl Alves.

“For investors, Bloubergstrand’s rising popularity will probably see prices continue to climb for the foreseeable future,” says Alves. “Demand for property in the Bloubergstrand area remains high, with 52% of existing owners living in their homes for 11 years or more. An interesting statistic is that 31% of recent buyers into the area are aged between 18 and 35 with the majority of sellers aged between 36 and 49.

“Investing in Bloubergstrand will allow you to experience the incredible community and lifestyle it has to offer; a truly life-changing experience,” she says.

Favourite places and things to do

I’ve lived in Blouberg for close to eight years now, and I absolutely love it here. I find it has a really relaxed vibe with a huge selection of things to do outdoors as well as fantastic places to eat and grab a drink – most with a spectacular view, of course! – Resident Alexander May Picture: Supplied

1 Eat

Open daily from 8am till 5pm, Café Blouberg is about as close to the rocks and waves as you can get, without actually being on the beach. The cute and casual eatery complements the view with easy cafe-style food, from hearty breakfasts to light lunches. Do not miss the lemon meringue tart. Call 021 554 4462.

2 Shop

Large malls are the order of the day in this area, crammed with retailers providing everything you could possibly need. Eden on the Bay Mall offers shopping, restaurants, coffee shops and more, including the ubiquitous view, surfing on the doorstep, and lawns for picnics. It’s even pet-friendly, so take the pooches along, but keep them on a leash. Contact

3 Drink

Ons Huisie is another place among many that make the most of their location at the water’s edge. Here too you can tuck into a great meal, indoors or outside with the ocean spray tickling your face. Let your lunchtime wine or beer lead you gently into sundowners; classic cocktails include pina coladas, strawberry daiquiris, mojitos and margaritas, as well as the house speciality, Summer Bliss. 4 Beaches Not only is this stretch of gorgeous coastline a highly desirable destination for kite surfers from all over the world, it also offers kilometres of soft white sand for walkers and sun worshippers on less windy days, otherwise the sunblock will become pebble-dashed. Or, time your visit with the sunset hour for glorious photo opportunities.
