A pair of riding boots which were worn by Napoleon while he was in exile on the Atlantic island of St Helena are scheduled to be knocked down by the auction house Binoche & Giquello in Paris on November 29.

The boots are expected to fetch up to 80000 euros (more than R1.3million).

The French statesman and military leader, who rose to prominence after the French Revolution, died on the British island on May 5 1821 at the age of 51.
