Bidding begins for beaker used by king of rock ‘n roll
A paper cup Elvis Presley drank from 52 years ago has gone up for sale.
The late music legend is said to have sipped from the Dixie beverage holder after his concert in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1956. The innocuous item had already attracted bids of up to $157 (about R1910) just hours after going on sale on the online auction site eBay.
eBay’s sales pitch states: “You are bidding on an authentic Dixie cup Elvis Presley drank from on 19 April 1956 at 10.30am at the corner of 3rd and Boston in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Presley had performed the night before in Tulsa and this cup was obtained from Elvis the following morning at 10.45am after he left his hotel.
He ate and went shopping that morning before heading to Oklahoma City for his concert there later that night.”
The cup comes with a letter of authenticity and a notebook full of “research” relating to events surrounding the beaker.
The winning bidder will be sent the cup inside the box it has been stored in since 1956. Photos of Presley with the item have been uploaded to support the sales pitch, including one that zooms in on the cup and appears to show a faint outline of the date and Presley’s signature.
The cup is apparently owned by a devoted female fan who has kept it in a box alongside an autographed picture of the King of Rock ‘* ’ Roll since 1956.
Last November, divorce papers signed by Presley and his ex-wife, Priscilla, sold for £20000 in Devizes, England. The 12-page document is dated August 15 1972, and states the pair – who had a daughter, Lisa Marie Presley – agreed to divide their property to avoid further “emotional stress”. In terms of the settlement, Elvis had to hand over prized possessions, including his 1971 Mercedes-Benz, Cadillac Eldorado and Harley Davidson.
Priscilla, now 72, was recently rumoured to be in a romantic relationship with Tom Jones, 77, but says they are “just good friends”.
