Places of interest and things to do in the Breede Valley

1 Retreat (McGregor)

“The beautiful Temenos Retreat is our oasis of tranquillity, where you can be quiet in the ‘Garden of the Beloved’, as the owner loving calls it, or find food for your soul on many different levels,” says Rabie. 023625 1871.

2 Resort

Montagu Springs Resort offers affordable self-catering accommodation in a tranquil haven away from city life, and is famous for its hot mineral springs. 023614 1050.

3 Wine estates

Weltevrede in Bonnievale (0236162141) offers underground cellar tastings. Take a boat cruise on the Breede River at Viljoensdrift (0236151901). Esona (0824175362), just outside Robertson, does music and wine pairings, and you can blend, bottle and label your own wine creation at Excelsior, which also has a deli and a guesthouse. 0236151980.

McGregor is one of those rare, unspoilt gems. When your path through life happens to take you there, you will either return often, or, as in my case, never leave again. This unique little village is surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, Karoo veld and Die Krans Nature Reserve. Life in McGregor can be very busy and exciting or unhurried, peaceful and relaxed. The choice is yours. – Mariana Rabie lives in Lavender Cottage in the upper village, where she runs a self-catering cottage and B&B Picture: Supplied

4 Conservation

Visit the donkeys at Eseltjiesrus Sanctuary just outside McGregor, where you meet rescued residents and learn their stories. For a small donation, you can sponsor a donkey to ensure it lives out its days in comfort. 0236251593.

5 Outdoors

Melozhori Game Reserve is home to more than 18 species of game and an abundance of fauna and flora. Explore on horseback or on a game drive. 0724194933.
