Places of interest and things to do in Paarl

1 Monument
Paarl gained international attention when, on February 11, 1990, Nelson Mandela walked out of Victor Verster Correctional Centre (now known as Drakenstein Correctional Centre), ending 27 years of imprisonment and beginning the march to South Africa’s democratic era. Today a bronze statue of Mandela stands outside the prison.

2 Eat
The Spice Route’s old farm house offers a variety of activities, from chocolate making, beer brewing and glass blowing to food. Phone 021 863 5200.

“Living in Paarl has been my wife Henriëtte and my privilege since 2016. We live in a 115-yearold house in Lemoenkloof and we love the town, which has a village feel to it. It boasts many cosy coffee shops, boutiques, butchers and delis and our own cinema, the Minimax. The Paarl Mall is just a few kilometres from the town centre. The town has great views from the beautiful Paarl Mountain and Paarl Rock and is also the location of the unique Afrikaans
Taalmonument. We love all that Paarl offers.” – Resident Barry Geyer

4 Wine
Nederburg is one of South Africa’s most pedigreed wine estates. The manor house, built in 1800 and now home to The Red Table restaurant, overlooks lawns and gardens. Close by is the tasting centre where visitors can sample a wide selection of award-winning wines. Cellar tours are on offer, and must be pre-booked. Picnics are available in the gardens. Visit the Old Cellar Museum for a fascinating glimpse of the Nederburg story. Phone 021 862 3104.
