Place of interest and things to do in Zonnebloem

1 Eat

Charly’s Bakery (0214615181) once starred in its own TV show broadcast around the world, which is why tourists flock there to try a cupcake iced in the bakery’s signature style. Dias Tavern (0214657547) is not smart or fancy with its plastic tablecloths, but it is famous for its well-priced Portuguese food. Lefty’s, the original dive bar, is in Harrington Street, where it serves the best ribs in town, disco fries and amazing pulled pork (0214610407). Upstairs is home to Downtown Ramen noodle bar.

2 Drink
Lying on the border of Zonnebloem, Truth Coffee Roasting (0212000440) has been voted the best coffee shop in the world on more than one occasion. This is partly to do with the extreme attention given to its coffee – served without sugar unless you ask for it – as well as its steampunk-inspired decor and staff uniforms. After dark, head to Harrington Street. This is where you’ll find SurfaRosa (0214612276) to knock back drinks specials during happy hour between 5pm and 6pm, soak them up with pizza, and get down to the music.

For the past five years I’ve lived in Zonnebloem, a colourful community nestled between Walmer Estate and Vredehoek. I absolutely love living here because I’m literally a two-minute drive away everything in the CBD. Having grown up in the southern suburbs one can really appreciate the convenience that comes with living so close to the city centre. The sense of community is evident when you enter the suburb. With several places of worship on my doorstep, I am extremely thankful and blessed to call Zonnebloem my home.

3 Culture
The District Six Museum Foundation, above, was established in 1989, and in 1994 the District Six Museum itself came into being. It provides a reminder of the apartheid era as well as the culture and history of the area before the forced removals. 0214667200.

4 Performing arts
Named after Athol Fugard, the playwright whose work has moved audiences around the globe as it reflects the racism and inhumanity of apartheid, The Fugard Theatre, below left, presents world-class theatre alongside the finest world ballet, opera and theatrical cinema screenings. The musical King Kong runs until March 4, after which West Side Story will be staged. 0214614554.
