America’s Baltimore Museum of Art has sold five paintings by Andy Warhol and other modern masters at Sotheby’s auctions for nearly $8 million (about R100m).

The artworks – one each by Warhol, Franz Kline and Jules Olitski and two by Kenneth Noland – were sold at auctions in New York last month.

The Baltimore Museum of Art, which previously owned the paintings, all by white men, will use the funds to buy art created post1943 by black artists, including women, to improve diversity in the museum’s collection.
