Millions for mask from Congo

A Walschot-Schoffel Kifwebe Congolese mask (pictured) was auctioned by Christie’s for $4.215million (more than R64m) in New York recently.

Worn over the face and accessorised with raffia-palm beards, these now valuable Kifwebe masks have been used for hundreds of years by the Songye people of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The mask was probably made in the 19th century.
