For fisherman, the lot that will make their pulses quicken is a Bertram flybridge vessel. The model on offer is a 1983 Bertram 42, a deep sea fishermen’s ultimate dreamboat.

Peter Maskell Auctioneers is staging a major auction of plant and equipment and other assets at Queensmead Industrial in Durban on Tuesday.

The sale, at 20 Martin Drive, starts at 9.30am and will feature a wide variety of construction equipment such as top branded tipper trucks and excavators, and luxury pleasure vehicles such as a 2013 Jeep Wrangler Sahara and 2012 Dodge Ram 1500 4×4.

For fisherman, the lot that will make their pulses quicken is a Bertram flybridge vessel. The model on offer is a 1983 Bertram 42, a deep sea fishermen’s ultimate dreamboat.

As one devotee wrote on his website: “In the eyes of any fisherman on this planet, the Bertram 42 is like a son or daughter: always beautiful in their eyes. You don’t buy these boats for aesthetics. You buy the vessel for its easygoing classic nature. This is a boat that makes fishing a breeze – and boating safe.”

So safe, in fact, that a Bertram 42 in September 1995 incredibly survived a Hurricane Opal hammering with relatively minor damage – and could after repairs sail the deep seas again. Hurricane Opal was a Category 4 hurricane that caused severe damage along the northern Gulf Coast of the US.

The Bertram boat company was founded in 1960 by Dick Bertram, an American yachting fanatic and powerboat racer who built the first Bertram, a 31-foot glass “Moppie”. The Bertram 31 launched a line of performance and sport-fishing boats – ranging up to 80 feet long – that became known for their excellent ride and sea keeping in unforgiving conditions.

Bidding for the Bertram should be turbulent.

Viewing is August 28 from 10am to 3pm for all the assets on offer.
