Omni Auctioneers is preparing for a bumper season before Christmas, beginning with its monthly catalogued Select auction at the end of October, which will offer bidders an opportunity to acquire unusual individual pieces, ranging from large pieces of furniture to dainty jewellery items.

Shona Robie, head of the collectables department, says items of significance will include bronzes from South Africa, Europe and Asia. “A highlight will be the Meiji period (1868-1912) bronze of a Japanese warrior.”

Providing a contrast to the bronzes will be four Clarice Cliff ceramics, with estimates ranging from R2000 to R8000 each.

Omni’s fine art head of department, Gary Shean, says there will be more than 100 South African and international works of art on offer, from paintings to prints, with prices pitched at all pockets. “Collectors and investors will be spoilt for choice with works by family favourites and lesser-known artists. Highlights will include works by Boonzaier, Domsaitis, Kibel, Strat Caldecott, Clarke and Van Nazareth.”

The auction will also feature items for the home, says Warren Scheuer, Omni’s furniture specialist. “More than 70 lots of unusual pieces of furniture, from the 18th century through to the contemporary, will go under the hammer. Also available will be carpets, including Persian and Kelim handwoven examples, and an array of lighting.”

In addition, there will be silver and silverplate items, jewellery and watches, making this an auction for all pocket sizes, says Karen Shean, head of department: silver.

The auction items may be viewed daily between 10am and 5pm from today until Monday.

The auction will take place from 2.30pm on Tuesday at Omni’s rooms, 9 Hemlock Street, Newlands. Print catalogues will be available at the venue. Online catalogues can be viewed at www.omni.co.za.
