A unique hand-crafted chess set, depicting the historical conflict of the South African political landscape pre-1994, is one of the interesting lots for the Powells Auctioneers art and collectables auction in Woodstock on October 28 at 11am.

Each chess piece is hand-crafted, hand-painted and varnished. The white figures represent political characters of the apartheid regime, including a regal Evita Bezuidenhout, and the black pieces represent leading struggle veterans active on the eve of democracy in 1994.

The black vanguard is guarded by pawns from Umkhonto we Sizwe, and the white pawn protectors are members of the old SA Police. Lifelike players in the set include Nelson and Winnie Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and FW de Klerk.

Viewing is October 26 and 27at The Argyle, 1 Argyle Road, Woodstock. Pre-registration is essential. For more details, call 0825515654 or 0825554333 or email info@powells.co.za.
