De Waterkant is full of trendy restaurants, including Shio (modern Japanese, 064 661 7474) and its sibling around the corner, Lucky Bao (079 067 4919). Besides getting a great cup of coffee at Origin, you can attend a three-hour Home Brew Course to learn “how to make good coffee at home without a machine”. The course includes coffee theory, brewing basics and hands-on alternative brewing, and costs R600. Origin offers other courses as well, including barista training and cupping sessions. Jenny Morris has her cooking school in the Cape Quarter, where you can sign up for interactive classes in her Cooks’ Playground. Morris hosts the classes and shares her wealth of food knowledge, demonstrates dishes and helps students to prepare their own.
