Russell Crowe wanted his Master and Commander character, Captain Jack Aubrey, to play an elegant instrument

A violin made by renowned Italian maker Leandro Bisiach in 1890, and used by Russell Crowe in the 2003 film Master and Commander, was sold on auction for $104000 (about R1.34 million).

Crowe wanted his Master and Commander character, Captain Jack Aubrey, to play an elegant instrument, so he had a musician friend and his violin teacher track down the violin.

It was sold by Christie’s, along with a faux-Baroque bow as well as the piece of silk the actor had placed under his chin when he played the instrument in the film.
