An autographed Ernest Hemingway letter and signed envelope, which documents the legendary marlin that inspired his The Old Man and the Sea novel, has been sold on auction for $28000 (about R392000) by Nate Sanders of Los Angeles.

The Old Man and the Sea was published in 1952 and was the last major Hemingway work published during his lifetime. One of his most famous works, the story deals with Santiago, an old Cuban fisherman who struggles with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream off the coast of Cuba.

Spencer Tracy played the challenging role in a memorable film version made in 1958.
