JOBURG: Our insider’s guide to Bassonia

Set amid mountains, Bassonia offers residents and potential homeowners magnificent views from properties in every price range, from luxury living to first-time purchases

Bassonia has a mix of affordable and luxurious properties, giving buyers and rental tenants from a wide income spectrum the perfect opportunity to enjoy quality lifestyle in the New South.
The suburb is renowned for the breathtaking views the scenic mountainous setting guarantees and gives residents ready access to a variety of shopping and recreational facilities, plus a host of privileges associated with living here.
The Mall of the South officially launched in September last year and expanded the shopping, dining and entertainment offering in an area known for recreational amenities that include Rietvlei Zoo Farm, Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve and Glenvista Country Club.

“Bassonia is a prestigious suburb on the southern outskirts of Joburg, where both sales and rentals are in demand due to the combination of affordable and high-status homes,” says Re/Max All Stars area specialist Madelaine du Preez.
She describes the suburb as a well-planned neighbourhood that makes for “amazing living conditions” well-situated close to routes, in addition to being conveniently located within a 10-minute drive of the Joburg CBD.
The N12 skirts Bassonia’s northern boundary. The suburb borders Glenvista to the west and Gleneagles to the north-west, Eastcliff and Oakdene to the north and north-west respectively, with Meyersdal Nature Reserve to the east.

Bassonia offers a market-related property portfolio, says Du Preez. “It offers a perfect blend of homes, ranging from properties for first-time homebuyers to pristine homes with cinema rooms and remarkable entertainment areas on stands up to 3 000m2 or bigger.”

She says entry-level one-bedroom apartments usually start from the mid-R600 000s, two-bedroom apartments are priced between R850 000 and R1.5 million, and three-bedroom apartments sell from around R950 000.
“Free-standing homes can be found from around R1.5m, but mostly range between R2m and R5m,” says Du Preez, who recommends Bassonia for its selection of luxurious properties.
Glen Shopping Centre offers convenient one-stop shopping, dining and entertainment.

“Bassonia offers two upmarket estates, enjoying 24-hour access control and security.”
One of the upmarket estates is Bassonia Rock, which resembles a European coastal village due to its continental-style architecture of homes built on different levels, says Du Preez.
Bassonia Estate comprises astonishing homes affording residents exquisite views of the valleys below with walkways as well as flora and fauna.
“Properties in Bassonia Estate range from R3m to R7m, although some have sold for beyond R8m,” says Du Preez, noting that this year has witnessed remarkably buoyant real estate activity.
For instance, 55 full-title properties have sold in Bassonia, Bassonia Estate and Bassonia Rock between January and July, compared to 58 for the whole of last year. The majority of sectional title buyers are aged between 25 and 34, and the trend points to an increasingly younger demographic for the area overall, says Du Preez.

She says Bassonia has a similar profile to Meyersdal in terms of value and property sizes.

Tumelo Nkisi’s places of interest and things to do

I work on the West Rand so living here has been a blessing as I can travel against the traffic on the N12 to and from work. It’s also easy to get to Mpumalanga in the east. My nearest
shopping mall is Glen Shopping Centre, a mere kilometre away, but Mall of the South is also
not far away. The area has lots of good schools, and St Martin’s School is about 2km from home. There are also lots of golfing facilities, hiking trails and nature spots in the area and nearby. – Resident Tumelo Nkisi
