67-minute auction raises funds for Childline

Seasoned auctioneer donates expertise on Mandela Day

Goindustry DoveBid answered the call to “make the world a better place” by hosting a 67-minute charity auction for Childline to mark Mandela Day. 

Joey Burke, one of GoDove’s seasoned auctioneers, offers his expertise to Childline Gauteng on an annual basis for this Mandela Day event. Childline is a non-profit organisation whose mission is to protect children against violence while creating a culture of children’s rights in South Africa. 

“This is the perfect way to spend our 67 minutes. Nelson Mandela believed in every child’s right to education and a happy, healthy life.” says Burke. 

The once-small community event was inadvertently started by Nancy Morake, a Joburg resident, who decided to sell her secondhand clothes and donate the money to the community, says Tamzin van Niekerk, public relations officer at GoIndustry DoveBid. 

“Morake approached Childline Gauteng, and the idea was born. She remains just as involved, and the event has now grown into a successful annual project, raising close to R120 000 since its inception. 

“The auctions have proved to be entertaining and competitive, thanks to Burke’s auction antics and experience. “He has raised more than R40 million in the past decade for charities, including the Amy Biel Foundation, Soil For Life, Reach for a Dream, Fellows for Cancer Trust and Ithemba Trust.” 

A wide variety of items were on auction this year, including tablets, food hampers, weekend getaways, spa vouchers, books and artworks. “Items were donated by Investec, Mr Sweet, Sorbet, Penguin Random House, community members and Morake herself, to name a few,” says Van Niekerk. 

“Bidders from the surrounding community participated to raise funds for Childline.” Burke says: “It’s a wonderful feeling when an organisation’s expectations are met. I look forward to next year’s auction, where we aim to raise more than R67 000.” 

The event forms part of GoDove’s corporate social responsibility programme. In further support of Mandela Day, GoDove made and delivered more than 1 000 sandwiches, together with fruit and soup, to Douglas Murray Home and The Haven Night Shelter, two non-profit organisations in Cape Town that care for the frail and homeless respectively. 

“Our aim is to celebrate Madiba’s legacy in a way that creates long-lasting change,” says Burke.
