Queen of creativity

Dramatic flair and cerebral style come together in a home shared by a couple who confess they are romantic hoarders of memories.

In a first-floor apartment in the sought-after Melrose area in Johannesburg, quirky creativity and brainy elegance are juxtaposed.

Actress and model Tshegofatso Seakgoe, 27, shares the vibrant space with her boyfriend, who holds an MBA from Oxford, and the lovers’ different personalities show through in the sunny place they call home.
Seakgoe will be appearing soon in the highly anticipated Broken Vows and is well known for her role in The Queen Mzansi.
“You can see we are modern-day hoarders. We can’t throw anything away and love to keep unusual and memorable things – it makes the apartment so interesting.”
Small replicas of Minions and Hello Kitty reside alongside photographs of her partner’s graduation ceremony at Oxford.
The young actress says she likes neutrals and the space features light enhancing textures with layers of fiction and memories that play up the casual and classic furniture. A grand piano takes centre stage and provides a surface to display charming collections of collected items.

Seakgoe’s partner bought the piano when he decided to learn how to play. A coffee table on castor wheels holds books and a bonsai tree Seakgoe admits is not thriving; but she “loves to keep romantic flower gifts after the time”.
The en-suite master bedroom has glittering evening dresses laid out in preparation of the fund-raiser Diamond Ball she will be attending later.
Large windows shed daylight on her favourite muted tones of turquoise and cream linen. “My style is earthy and classic and I’ve been influenced by the drama scene.”
Having lived in the apartment for under a year, the couple have a mix of his and hers, and even the bathroom is clearly divided. The light finishing and integrated cabinetry offer plenty of room to store their treasures.

A large leather lounge suite offers great TV viewing and a second bedroom and bathroom offer additional space. Screen grabs of their favourite Instagram pictures are displayed as blown-up posters on the walls – a sentimental reminder of special occasions.
The couple’s love for retro functional items is evident, and recognisable games such as Jenga and poker speak to their love of fun. “My favourite thing is a retro Peroni cooler box – it works so well and looks cool. We want to add some mismatched chairs to the dining table,” says Seakgoe, who is an excellent cook and says the couple frequently entertain.

As a former model, Seakgoe is comfortable in front of the camera, but has not taken formal acting training.

After Greenside High School, she studied International Relations and spent a few years in the political corporate scene, but soon realised happiness lay in her passion for acting.
“I’d like to stretch myself with theatre, but ultimately, movies are where I would like to end up; maybe eventually something with a cooking show.” With a busy year under her belt, the actress is fast becoming a household name and will soon be seen a movie, State Enemy, about the notorious cash-in transit gangster Collen Chauke.
