Tip of the week: Check before you leave

A checklist if you plan on leaving your house unoccupied

For those who are going to be leaving your homes unoccupied over the holiday period, let’s go over the usual checklist.

Test that the burglar alarm is working properly, and I mean test. Purposely set it off to see if your response company responds and has the correct phone numbers to call during your absence.
If you have beams in the garden, check the south-easter is not going to blow branches or leaves into the beam, repeatedly setting off the alarm and annoying neighbours or your key-holders.
If builders have not finished what was promised, ensure that everything possible has been done to make your home secure. Make sure piles of sand, rubbish and rubble are removed.
Cancel newspaper deliveries and ensure somebody collects your mail. And don’t tell everybody on social media that you are away.
Switch off all non-essential devices that are likely to drain your electricity and water supplies and ensure your key-holders know where to find your electricity board and water mains.
I don’t know if it will still work, but drop off a cake at
your local police station. Tell them you are going away and ask them to keep an eye on your property.
