Tip of the week: Always use compliant contractors

The industry up north, starting in Durban and now Joburg, is coming under threat from what is known as the “construction mafia”.

I never stop promoting the use of properly registered and compliant contractors to ensure our industry in Cape Town and its surrounds remains strong, well controlled and relatively trouble-free.

The industry up north, starting in Durban and now Joburg, is coming under threat from what is known as the “construction mafia”.

I do not intend going into detail here, other than to say because these areas do not control wages and fair play the way we do – ensuring that everyone is treated equally – it is easy for those who feel badly treated to take matters into their own hands – even using violence if necessary to obtain work.

So once again, another appeal to everyone out there to support those companies trying to do their best for their workers, supported by the Building Industry Bargaining Council and associations such as the Master Builders Association.
