This week it was fun to catch up with Theo, who I first met through the column in March 2016. Theo had asked me to help work out how much his home should be insured for. I did this with pleasure, and he has continued to read my column since.
He called last week to ask for advice about a box gutter, so I popped in on my way home. When we first met, Theo had retired and was going to start renovating the home he had just bought.
If you want to see what we are capable of in terms of DIY, go no further than following in Theo’s footsteps. He has tackled everything from installing water tanks to building in Geberit toilet cisterns (apparently they have their own demonstration workshop where you can learn how to do it).
He’s also done the usual mundane painting and built a carport. His latest project is to build a braai room doing his own brickwork. Theo has thrown himself into this with energy and passion and I am proud to have been a small part of it through advice offered in the column.
We have promised to get together again after my holiday, and Theo is hoping to send me some of what he has learnt to include in the column.
