We think a blaze won’t happen to us – but ask Knysna, it can

I would rather be singing in the rain than writing this column with sunshine pouring through my study windows. A look at the weather forecast does not show much rain in the weeks ahead.

The constant carrying of buckets between shower, toilet cisterns and the washing machine is really starting to depress me. I’d give anything to have the time in the shower to give my vocal chords a good blast.

My family from Knysna have been here for the weekend to escape the horror of their once beautiful town, and the first thing I had to do was lecture them about our water-saving methods. And what thanks do we get from the City of Cape Town for our efforts? Notice of an increase in the cost of our water.

I fail to see how this is going to make us save more water because there is only so much you can do. Those of us fortunate enough will pay the extra, while those less privileged will simply not pay their accounts and not be punished.

I hope the “extra” money collected will be put towards ensuring we do not reach this crisis again, but my guess is that the extra tariffs will, at best, only balance the budget because of the reduced consumption we have all tried so hard to achieve.

It was distressing to hear from my family how bad the devastation is in Knysna.

The main thing that was coming through – I have been harping on about this for years – is that so many people are under-insured, both in terms of their property and contents.

We all live in the hope a fire or a natural disaster will never happen to us, but these things do happen, and the last thing you need is to have to replace a home or your contents with money you don’t have.

Please take time this week to check your insurance sums.
